Thyroid

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. Even though it is small, it plays a very important role in a child’s growth and development.

There are two main types of thyroid problems in children:

Hypothyroidism – When the thyroid works too slowly.

Hyperthyroidism – When the thyroid works too fast.

Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Symptoms depend on whether the thyroid is slow or overactive.

If you notice these symptoms, it is important to get thyroid tests done.

Signs of Hypothyroidism (Slow Thyroid)
 

  • Weight gain

  • Tiredness

  • Feeling cold often

  • Constipation

  • Slow growth

  • Delayed puberty

  • Poor school performance

  • Dry skin

  • Puffy face

Signs of Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)
 

  • Weight loss despite good appetite

  • Fast heartbeat

  • Sweating more than usual

  • Anxiety or irritability

  • Shaky hands

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Bulging eyes (in some cases)

Reasons (Causes) of Thyroid Problems

Thyroid issues in children may happen due to:

Autoimmune Conditions

Sometimes, the body mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.​

Genetic Factors

Family history of thyroid problems can increase risk.​

Iodine Imbalance

Too little or too much iodine can affect thyroid function.

Congenital Thyroid Problem

Some babies are born with thyroid gland issues.
